Lens of Integrity
Do you demonstrate integrity as a leader? What would your employees say about your credibility? Are you developing a culture of integrity around you?
On the surface, it seems straight forward - demonstrate integrity. It is fairly easy to define, to agree with, and to stand for but, if it is that straight forward why do so many leaders get called on their integrity?
What is integrity?
Well, it depends on who you ask. Each of us has an acceptable range of integrity that differs based on the lens in which we view the world. The lens in which we view the world is determined by our life experiences, how we were raised, situations we have faced, relationships we have had, etc. We use our lens when we judge ourselves and others.
As a leader, your integrity is judged every day. If your employees are judging you through their particular "lens of integrity", how can you successfully build credibility?
Here are a few solid ways in which you can act with integrity and build credibility with your employees, regardless of their individual lens.
Keep your word - honor your commitments, promises, and agreements
Tell the truth - be honest with everyone and avoid "little" lies
Demonstrate your values - know and act in accordance with your deepest values
Take responsibility - if you make a mistake, own up to it immediately and right the situation
Stay humble - don't look for approval and when you can, let people save face
Check your gut - consider how would you feel if you were the latest news headline
