What is Getting in Your Way?

For at least 10 years, I have had a goal on my list that I have yet to accomplish. Of course, this probably isn’t true for you, or is it? I think about this goal often and consider why haven’t I been able to accomplish it? “It’s hard” - yes, most goals are challenging. “I don’t have the time” - possibly true, but if it’s important I can make time.

There are many things that keep us from accomplishing our goals and achieving our full potential. Things that deplete our energy and make it impossible to see options and gain forward momentum. Consider your list of “things I have yet to accomplish”. What is it for you - moving into a leadership role, changing jobs, starting your own business, running a marathon? It’s likely you can name at least one thing you want to accomplish but have yet to do so. What’s keeping you from accomplishing it?

For me, it’s learning to speak Spanish. This is something I have wanted to do for many years, I have even started the process. . .twice! I have traveled to Spanish speaking countries, I have listened to others speak Spanish, even listened to Spanish radio stations. Other people speak multiple languages, why can’t I?

Wait, what is that word? CAN’T. . .How many times have you told yourself, “I can’t”?

Here are four different internal blocks, things that get in the way of accomplishing what we want. Identifying which one is getting in your way is the first step to overcoming it.

  • Limiting Beliefs - Limiting beliefs are things you believe about the world, situations, people and about your life. These are statements that you believe to be true and hold you back.

  • Assumptions - An assumption is a belief that because something happen in the past, it will happen again. Assumptions hold you back because you are operating on the belief that you "already know" something won't work. Essentially, you have failed before you even try. When you hold on tight to your assumptions, you miss out on a lot of opportunity.

  • Interpretations - An interpretation is an idea you have about an event or experience - a story you tell yourself based on your beliefs and past experiences. When you make an interpretation, you unconsciously look for evidence to support your story. When you stick with your interpretation, you have little chance of seeing other possibilities.

  • Voice inside your head tell you, “I’m not good enough” - The "I'm not good enough" voice is our head that tells us not to try, to take the safe road. This voice is the most powerful of all the energy blocks and it's hard not to listen to this voice. When you experience fear, it is an indicator that this block is at work. Getting past the fear will increase energy. This voice is deeply rooted within us. The first step in getting past it is to identify it.

What blocks are holding you back from accomplishing things that are important?
